In August 1966, on Vintém Hill in Niterói, Brazil, a simple kite-flying incident led to one of the most confusing discoveries in forensic history. A local boy stumbled upon the bodies of two men, lying neatly side-by-side.
But it wasn’t the bodies that baffled investigators; it was what they were wearing.
The men, later identified as Manoel Pereira da Cruz and Miguel José Viana, were both electronics technicians from a nearby town. They were dressed in formal business suits. Their bodies showed absolutely no signs of violence or struggle.
And they were wearing handmade, crude lead masks over their eyes—masks that were designed to block something out, perhaps radiation or blinding light.
Near their bodies, police found:
